Born in Taiwan, Fay Ku draws on her personal and cultural history, creating large scale drawings and paintings on paper that juxtapose delicate touch with narrative insight. Her elegant line and seductive patterning refer directly to traditional Asian art, while her sharply focused subject matter subverts any decorative connotations to pack a psychological punch. Through sparse means she presents complicated images that explore the poetic and deeply emotional issues of childhood, and identity. The children she depicts are vulnerable yet resilient, wary yet self contained. They survive at the mercy of threatening adults and an indifferent society, but thrive on their own rich and imaginative inner resources.

This is Fay Ku's first solo exhibition in NYC. Her work was featured by metaphor contemporary art at the international art fair, scope-Hamptons in South Hampton, NY in July, 2005. Her work will be seen in upcoming exhibitions at the Asian American Art Center, and at A.I.R. both in NYC. She is an MFA candidate at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
